To make krummelpap on the stove, you will need maize meal, water, and salt. Start by bringing water and salt to a boil in a thick-based pot with a lid. When the water reaches a rolling boil, carefully pour the maize meal into the center of the boiling water—do not stir at this stage[4].
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let it cook on medium heat for about 5–8 minutes without opening the pot[4]. After this initial steaming, reduce the stove heat, open the lid, and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon or fork to break up lumps and create crumbs[5].
Place the lid back on and simmer on low heat for 20–30 more minutes. Every 5–10 minutes, use a fork or spoon to “fluff up” or lightly stir the pap to encourage a crumbly texture. Be careful not to let the pap stick to the bottom or burn[4]. Optionally, add a knob of butter to the pap before the final fluffing for extra flavor[3].
Serve hot, as a side with stews or grilled meats, or enjoy with milk and sugar as a breakfast option[2].
